Bulldog Health Conditions#
Skin Fold Dermatitis
moderateVery CommonChronic skin fold infections (intertrigo) in facial wrinkles, tail folds, and body creases. Requires daily cleaning and drying of skin folds. Atopic dermatitis also common — affects approximately 10-15% of Bulldogs.
Prevention: Daily cleaning and drying of all skin folds.
Symptoms: foul odor from folds, redness, discharge
Cherry Eye
moderateVery CommonProlapse of the third eyelid gland causing a red, swollen mass. Very common in Bulldogs due to facial anatomy. Surgical tacking preferred over removal to preserve tear production and prevent dry eye.
Prevention: Surgical tacking.
Symptoms: red mass in eye
Pulmonic Stenosis
seriousCommonCongenital narrowing of the pulmonary valve restricting blood flow from the right ventricle. Bulldogs are a top-affected breed. Mild cases may be asymptomatic; severe cases cause exercise intolerance and right-sided heart failure. Balloon valvuloplasty is the primary treatment.
Prevention: Cardiac screening.
Symptoms: heart murmur, exercise intolerance
BOAS
life_threateningVery CommonSeverely narrowed airways due to elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, and hypoplastic trachea. Affects an estimated 50-70% of Bulldogs to some degree. Corrective surgery (soft palate resection, nares widening) can dramatically improve quality of life.
Prevention: Maintain weight. Avoid heat. Surgical correction often needed.
Symptoms: severe snoring, exercise intolerance, cyanosis, sleep apnea
Hip Dysplasia
seriousVery CommonBulldogs have the worst hip dysplasia rate of any breed — approximately 72% affected per OFA data. Their low-activity lifestyle somewhat mitigates clinical symptoms, but severe cases require surgical intervention.
Prevention: Weight management. Low-impact exercise only.
Symptoms: difficulty rising, bunny-hopping

Bulldog Life Stages#
puppy
0mo – 6moCompact, wrinkly puppies requiring immediate breathing assessment. Many Bulldogs are born via C-section due to large heads. Begin skin fold cleaning routine from day one. Avoid overheating — Bulldog puppies are extremely heat-sensitive.
adolescent
6mo – 1yrFilling out their stocky frame. Breathing issues may become more apparent as the soft palate develops. Stubborn but good-natured — respond well to positive reinforcement and food motivation. Begin evaluating need for BOAS corrective surgery.
young adult
1yr – 2.5yrReaching physical maturity with full wrinkle development. Establish lifetime skin care routine. Evaluate airways with vet — surgical correction ideally done before age 2. Weight management begins now as metabolism slows.
adult
2.5yr – 6yrSettled, easygoing companions. Obesity is the primary health threat — even 2-3 extra pounds significantly worsens breathing. Maintain strict portion control and gentle daily exercise. Skin fold infections require constant vigilance.
mature adult
6yr – 8yrReduced activity and increased sleeping. Breathing difficulties may worsen. Joint stiffness common due to their conformation. Monitor for cherry eye, skin infections, and overheating. Regular eye and skin assessments.
senior
8yr – 11yrBreathing and mobility challenges increase. BOAS symptoms often worsen with age. Joint disease and obesity compound each other. Biannual vet visits essential — focus on airway, skin, and joint assessment.
geriatric
11yr – end of lifeComfort-focused care with emphasis on breathing ease, temperature regulation, and mobility. Keep cool, keep lean, keep comfortable. Quality of life assessment should weigh respiratory function heavily.
Dental Milestones#
Bulldogs' undershot jaw and crowded teeth create very high dental disease risk. Teeth overlap and trap debris, accelerating tartar buildup. Professional cleanings 1-2x yearly recommended. Daily brushing critical but challenging due to facial structure.
