Poodle Health Conditions#
Hip Dysplasia
seriousCommonJoint malformation affecting approximately 12% of Standard Poodles per OFA data. Rare in Miniature and Toy varieties. Standard Poodle-specific screening recommended before breeding.
Prevention: OFA screening. Maintain healthy weight. Controlled exercise during growth.
Symptoms: difficulty rising, hind leg lameness, bunny-hopping
Sebaceous Adenitis
moderateModerateAutoimmune skin disease destroying sebaceous glands. Particularly affects Standard Poodles.
Prevention: Not preventable. Managed with oil baths, keratolytic shampoos, and sometimes cyclosporine.
Symptoms: scaling skin, hair loss (often on trunk), musty odor, secondary skin infections
Epilepsy
seriousModerateIdiopathic seizures with likely genetic basis. More common in Standard Poodles than Miniature/Toy varieties. Onset typically between 1-5 years. Managed with anticonvulsant medication and seizure diary.
Prevention: Not preventable. Managed with anticonvulsant medication. Keep seizure diary.
Symptoms: seizures (convulsions), staring spells, temporary confusion, loss of consciousness
Addison's Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism)
life_threateningModerateInsufficient production of adrenal hormones. Standard Poodles have 8x the risk of mixed breeds — among the highest of any breed. Miniature Poodles have moderate risk. Symptoms are vague (lethargy, vomiting) and often misdiagnosed initially.
Prevention: Genetic predisposition. Awareness of symptoms critical. Treatable with lifelong hormone replacement.
Symptoms: lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, muscle weakness, Addisonian crisis (collapse)
Bloat (GDV)
life_threateningCommonLife-threatening gastric torsion. Risk is specific to Standard Poodles due to their deep chest. Not a significant concern for Miniature or Toy varieties. Prophylactic gastropexy increasingly recommended for Standards.
Prevention: Multiple small meals. No exercise around mealtimes. Prophylactic gastropexy.
Symptoms: distended abdomen, unproductive retching, restlessness, pacing
